Oranges are truly one of the most versatile fruits, and they can be an integral part of recipes ranging from fruity desserts to citrusy dinners, with healthy drinks and snacks in between. When we talk about “oranges,” what do we really mean? There are over 300 types of oranges out there, so it’s not that simple just eating any orange fruit. The most readily available option is called a navel orange, and like the ubiquitous red apple, it’s really not very tasty to eat. or squeeze out. Looking for juice? Choose tangerines or Valencia oranges, which tend to be sweeter and juicier. Do you want an orange for a snack? Try mandarin, clementine, or orange cara cara. Are you looking for something a little outside the box? Try a blood orange or Tangelo (like the cross between a mandarin and a pomelo, which looks a bit like a very large grapefruit). There are obviously a lot of options, so use these pointers to get started, and then get creative with whatever type you can find.
Now that you have oranges on hand, what should you make with them? You can make something classically sweet, like upside-down citrus cake, ambrosia salad, or marmalade. Important tip: Rub the sugar with the orange peel before Mix it with other ingredients to infuse an extra citrus flavor. Or eat savory, with the forever-favorite sticky chicken, citrus roasted chicken, or shrimp ceviche (orange is one of the fruits that helps shrimp “cook” without heating).
