Chef Steve McHugh of San Antonio has opened a restaurant in downtown Austin

San Antonio celebrity chef Steve McHugh will open his first restaurant in Austin this summer, a six-time finalist announced at the James Beard Foundation on Wednesday, May 18.

Luminaire opened alongside Las Bis Bar inside the new Hyatt Centric Hotel at 721 Congress Avenue, with no official opening date set yet. As of now, customer service is expected to begin sometime in late summer.

McHugh is one of San Antonio’s most respected chefs, and was the city’s only finalist for the 2022 James Beard Awards. He’s the owner and executive chef of Cured, famous for its Baroque charcuterie plates, and the executive chef of Landrace, which celebrates regional Texas cuisine. Luminaire, with indoor and outdoor seating, will be a mixture of both, with craft beers, international wines and classic cocktails.

“I am delighted to be overseeing such an exciting new project,” McHugh said in a statement. “After nearly a decade of running Cured and more recently a Landrace in San Antonio, being in Austin now is a very meaningful thing for me. At Luminaire, I will continue my philosophy of incorporating and respecting the diversity of Texas local and seasonal ingredients, working closely with growers and ensuring sustainability as a top priority.”

San Antonio chef Steve McHugh (Landrace, Cured) has been nominated for six James Beard Awards. This is his first restaurant in Austin.

The 31-story, 246-room hotel, located adjacent to the Paramount and State Theaters, begins taking reservations Sept. McHugh will also handle food and beverage services for banquets at the hotel’s event spaces.

“Steve McHugh is a visionary in the culinary world, and we are thrilled to be teaming up with an accomplished and forward-looking chef,” said Hotel General Manager Harrison Compton.

The hotel also serves as a sort of preserve for its neighbors, Paramount and State Theatres, which are controlled by the Austin Theater Alliance. The staff will work on the fourth floor of the hotel, who has given the Austin Theater Alliance a 99-year lease for $1 a year, according to a 2019 story in the Austin Business Journal.

San Antonio Chef Steve McHugh will open the new Landrace restaurant at the Thompson San Antonio hotel soon.
