an employee of a Mexican restaurant has hepatitis; Presentation of a vaccine for pioneers

Roanoke, VA (WDBJ) – The Roanoke City and Ghanaian Health District (RCAHD) are offering the hepatitis A vaccine to people who have eaten at a Mexican restaurant in Roanoke during a specific set of dates.

May 23, RCAHD received a report of an injury to an employee at Tuco’s Taqueria Garaje at 416 Salem Avenue in Roanoke, and dispatched a team to conduct screening and interviews. RCAHD says the restaurant’s management team is cooperating fully with the investigation, and has determined that there is no significant risk of exposure to the public, because the employee did not deal directly with the food.

The Roanoke City Department of Health is offering a hepatitis A vaccine to anyone dining in Toko between May 3 and 15, 2022. Hepatitis A vaccines will be available on a first-come-first-served basis, while supplies continue at the Roanoke Department of Health, 2nd floor of 1502 Williamson Road:

Thursday, May 26, from 3 to 6 pm.

Friday, May 27, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Friday, May 27, 1-4 pm.

“While we are saddened to report another case associated with the hepatitis A outbreak currently in our area, we believe this potential exposure represents a low risk to the public. However, the hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for everyone, and may be available through your provider or pharmacist. Individuals are encouraged Uninsured or underinsured people should contact their local RCAHD health departments for vaccine opportunities,” said RCAHD Health Director, Dr. Cynthia Morrow.

“As soon as we found out from the Department of Health, we immediately notified staff and took all precautions suggested by the Department of Health,” Perry Restaurant Group said in a statement to WDBJ7. They added that the employee had not worked in the restaurant for two weeks.

This incident follows a similar incident at Luigi’s restaurant in Roanoke, as well as an outbreak involving an employee at Famous Anthony’s.
