Dubai restaurants have been awarded the first ever Michelin star in the Middle East

(CNN) – Home to the world’s tallest building and the world’s deepest swimming pool, Dubai is a stunning hub – from its architecture to its food. Now a number of the emirate’s restaurants have been awarded Michelin stars – the first of their kind in the Middle East.

The Michelin Dubai 2022 guide was launched on Tuesday, which includes 69 restaurants. Eleven have a Michelin star and 14 have a Bib Gourmand (considered to provide value for money) – along with 44 other “Michelin-selected” restaurants. Covering 21 cuisines, the guide aims to reflect the culinary diversity of a place where the vast majority of the population are foreign workers from all over the world.

Two restaurants have been awarded two Michelin stars – Stay by Yannick Alleno and Il Ristorante – Niko Romito.. Il Ristorante, located in the Bvlgari resort, has been honored “for its modern Italian cuisine of balance, purity and clarity.” And staying true to its “less is more” approach to French cuisine, According to a Michelin press release.

Nine restaurants have been awarded one Michelin star, including the nine-seat Japanese restaurant Höseki, the innovative Chinese restaurant Hakkasan, and Tasca by José Avillez, which serves Portuguese cuisine.

Although the selection includes cuisine from across the European and Asian continents, no restaurant specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine has been awarded a star. But Middle Eastern cooking has been appreciated among the recipients of the Bib Gourmand Awards – the restaurant category that offers a three-course gourmet experience at an average price of AED 250 (about $68). Beneficiaries include Levantine Bait Maryam and Al Khayma – serving rustic Emirati cuisine.

The Dubai guide may pave the way for Michelin’s recognition of culinary excellence elsewhere in the Middle East, and with Dubai hosting around 16 million tourists each year, the guide could help boost tourism even further.
