John Walter Appointed CEO of Food Allergy Science Initiative | News

The Food Allergy Science Initiative (FASI) today appointed veteran healthcare research leader John Walter as CEO of the Food Allergy Research Organization. Walter has served as FASI’s Director of Operations since January of this year.

Walter is the former CEO of Prader-Willi Research and former CEO of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where he has significantly expanded research to focus on partnerships with biotechnology and academia and increased the organization’s funding from $40 million to more than $320 million annually—the largest growth for a non-profit organization during that period. He has also consulted with other nonprofit organizations on governance, project philanthropy, and organizational design.

Walter’s philosophy as a “for-profit philanthropist” will allow him to leverage shared leadership disciplines, metrics, and operational efficiencies to achieve measurable results for FASI. As CEO, he will lead the next phase of the organization’s growth, working with current leadership and research teams to accelerate research and development of food allergy treatments.

Dr. Kristen Olsen, who helped found FASI in 2016 with the goal of bringing together the brightest minds in medicine and science to find a cure for food allergies, said Walter’s advancement to this position is recognition of FASI’s success and expansion. She has held the position of CEO since the organization was founded.

The Food Allergy Science Initiative is a 501(3)(c) organization that began as a collaborative effort with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University. Every founder has experienced the horror of watching their child suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction to foods that are usually harmless – nuts, fruits, legumes, eggs and dairy. The lack of scientific research in this area has led FASI to conduct its own research and build urgency around the need to learn about the biology of food allergy in order to develop effective treatments.
