The Charlotte Bodega brand is expanding into the Triangle, starting at a new location off Durham Ninth Street.
Shared Market began in Charlotte in 2002 and has grown over the years to four locations, including one across the South Carolina border in Rock Hill.
The brand will look to Durham for its fifth location, which will open at 1821 Green Street, in a building between Ninth and Broad Streets. The company purchased the property in March 2021 for $860,000.
Graham Worth of Raleigh is driving the Triangle Expansion into the Common Market.
“It’s a hybrid of a bottle store, wine store, and deli all in one place,” Worth said. “All the markets are built around the communities we serve, and they all have a unique and eclectic environment. They are all very unconventional and brilliantly put together.”
Everything is home made
Durham Common Market will move into a former one-story office building. Construction is already underway, adding a basement bar, outdoor seating and a butterfly-shaped roof with skylights.
Using a bodega model in New York City as an example, Worth said the common market aims to be an all-day requirement room, stocking handcrafted beer, snacks, and a sandwich table with everything home-made. The brand is looking to partner with local vendors to tackle the Common Market’s coffee program and potential pastry counter.
The sandwich menu will likely borrow from other common market locations, Worth said, with staples like the pepper cheese sandwich and pulled chicken salad.
“It’s kind of a small dining hall,” Worth said. “It has been described as a living room in the neighborhood. It is a place where everyone can feel comfortable with this environment.”
Worth said the Durham site is expected to open later this fall.
