Daily Harvest recalls lentils after customers reported ‘digestive problems’

The popular meal delivery service said this week that Daily Harvest is recalling its plate of crumbled lentils and leeks after receiving reports of “gastrointestinal problems” from customers who consumed the product.

Customers also took their complaints to social media. Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Twitter users have reported symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and liver damage after eating the dish.

In a Facebook post, a woman described having had a cholecystectomy, adding that “the meltdowns were delicious by the way.” One Reddit user wrote that their wives experienced “extreme tiredness, dark urine, low-grade fever and itching all over the body without a rash.”

Daily Harvest advised people to discard the product and not take it in a notice posted on its website on Sunday. She also said that she has reached out to customers who have purchased it.

“We have received reports from customers that French lentils + shallots cause gastrointestinal problems,” the company states. “We have simultaneously launched an investigation with internal and external experts throughout our supply chain and in accordance with regulatory procedures.”

Illness complaints aside, some found the company’s approach to advertising its recall less than tasteful.

Backlash ensued on social media after Daily Harvest posted a teaser shot of the dish retrieved to 600,000 followers on Instagram with the caption, “Important message regarding French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Link in bio with details.”

one watcher chirp “Link in bio with details about the cause of liver failure at #dailyharvest.”

Another commenter viewed the company’s post as a case study of how not to handle such situations, tweeting, “… Posting an aesthetically pleasing image advertising a product with a ‘ambiguous link in bio’ is definitely not the ambiance.”

Started in 2015, Daily Harvest is a food subscription company that ships frozen, pre-made, organic food products to designated zip codes across the country. Famous investors in the company include Serena Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow.

French lentils and shallots were introduced in April as a cooking food and added to other dishes or products, according to the company.

Daily Harvest did not immediately respond to a request for further comment, nor did the US Food and Drug Administration, which did not release the company’s recall notice as of Wednesday afternoon.
