Bradenton’s newest restaurant brings a taste of Mexico to Cortez

Happy diner-goers Avocado’s Cocina Mexicana & Bar were rewarded last week with a brisk business after a long wait for the opening of Bradenton’s newest restaurant.

Avocado’s, located at 6510 Cortez Road W., opened last Monday and may have opened a year ago, except for the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, owner Ramiro Ramirez said.

Ramirez, 38, has extensively redesigned the restaurant space, formerly occupied by Hurricane Grill & Wings and LeRoy Selmon’s, to bring something new to the street.

He started out in the dish washing, catering, and cooking business, and is also a co-owner of Habanero’s Mexican Grill and Bar, 5120 Manatee Ave. W.

“We try to serve authentic Mexican food. Everything is made from scratch based on my mom’s recipes. We try to make people happy,” Ramirez said.

Homemade appetizers are prepared as mild or hot as dinner likes, and the restaurant also offers full bar service and beverage service.

Why the name avocado? It’s the main ingredient in guacamole, a dip or spread that originated in Mexico.

“Mexican food is always popular. The restaurant will add to the area. “We’re happy to be open,” said Ramirez’s wife, Glay Nimlin.

Main courses (Platos Principales) in Avocado start around $13.

They include fajitas, chile verde (diced pork marinated in our signature avocado green sauce, served with rice, beans and tortillas), pollo borracho (grilled chicken breast topped with melted cheese, grilled onions, tomatoes and peppers, served with rice, beans and pico de gallo) and chimichangas. and carne asada (New York steak) and Mexicana steak.

These are not all the main dishes, but the chicken and shrimp entree is also worth noting.

The menu includes a variety of burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. Classic collector boards are also available (choose any two for $12.49 or any three for $14.99).

Appetizers, soups, salads and a children’s menu complement the menu.

Avocado’s is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
