Seniors on PEI can apply for a $100 food gift card

The Prince Edward Island government is offering $100 grocery gift cards to low-income seniors 65 or older in the province, to help with higher food costs.

Inflation in PEI is once again the highest in the country — the annual rate released on Wednesday was 11.1 percent in May, up from 8.9 percent in April.

“We know that older people on the island often have a steady income, and with rising food and fuel costs, they may have more difficulty obtaining healthy, nutritious food at local grocery stores,” Brad Trivers, Minister for Social Development, said in a written letter. Thursday release.

“Every little helps. This new support, along with the county government’s other inflationary programs, will help ensure people’s basic needs are met.”

The program is open to island residents age 65 and older who pay for groceries and who self-identify as living on a low income, according to the county’s new Nutrition Support Webpage for Seniors.

Applications are open until the end of August

Cards can be used at any Sobeys affiliated stores in PEI including Sobeys, Foodland, participating Co-ops and Lawtons Drugs.
