The first FeedKind® facility on an industrial scale heralds a new era of food security

San Mateo, California – (work wire) – Commissioning and start-up activities of the world’s first industrial-scale FeedKind have begun® A facility to produce a new and sustainable functional protein that does not use animal or vegetable ingredients in its production.

Calysseo, a joint venture between global animal nutrition leader Adisseo and protein innovator Calysta, will produce 20,000 tons of FeedKind® Aqua Protein annually from the facility in Chongqing, China.

Microbial protein is produced by natural fermentation in which no arable land, animal or plant material is used, and very little water is used in its production. Initially, the production will be available for use in China, the world’s largest aquaculture market.

While working under COVID-19 restrictions, the Calysseo team has maintained the schedule for the historic facility, which means FeedKind® It should be delivered to the first customers this year.

Jean-Marc Duplan, CEO of Adisseo, said: “This is a milestone as we move toward more sustainable forms of food making. Calysseo and FeedKind introduce the world’s first, a newly available sustainable, nutritious, non-GMO protein that offers significant health benefits over other feed ingredients, such as improved gut health and an improved immune response.”

“We have a long-standing commitment to improving the security and sustainability of the feed ingredient market and Calysseo is fulfilling a large part of that pledge. We will provide Chinese customers with a reliable, locally available supply of protein that meets their specific needs; produced in China for China.”

“We look forward to working with our customers as they begin to integrate this product into their supply chains.”

FeedKind® It is part of the family of ingredients developed by Calista, which harnesses the power of naturally occurring microorganisms that consume low-cost, earth-free carbon sources, transforming them into a nutritionally rich, non-GMO protein, ideal for food and feed applications.

The global aquaculture market is experiencing robust growth and is expected to become the third largest exporter of animal protein, producing more than 100 million tons of production.

Meanwhile, the population is set to grow to 10 billion by 2050, which means an increased demand for proteins.

said Alan Shaw Ph.D. Co-Founder, CEO, and President of Calysta Corporation: “Cell farming, where protein is grown in a controlled environment, is key to helping the world meet its future nutritional needs. Today will go down in history as a very important moment in developing and delivering new and sustainable sources of protein to meet the growing global demand.”

“For Calista, today is the result of years of work to develop Protein Without Borders – a protein that meets our growing demand for protein while protecting biodiversity. It also marks the beginning of a new phase in the Calysta story as we work to produce additional protein ingredients for food and feed applications.”

“We are proud to celebrate this achievement with our partner Adisseo We look forward to enjoying a successful relationship for many years to come.”

The strategic partnership between Adisseo and Calysta will directly address one of the most important opportunities in aquaculture – to provide high-quality seafood without adding additional pressure on the environment.

Pierre Casamata, Co-Managing Director of Calysseo, added: “The start of commissioning and commissioning activities for our first facility on schedule is a moment I am extremely proud of. We are doing something that has never been done before at scale – to reach this milestone in such a short time during the extremely challenging impacts of COVID-19 is rewarding. And a testament to the skill and commitment of the Calysseo team, this is from our joint venture partners.”

“We are very much looking forward to the first product coming off the line, and the introduction of FeedKind into the Chinese aquaculture market.”

FeedKind® It has been validated over several years after extensive experimentation across many common aquaculture species, including seabass, bream, and salmon. Kasetsart University in Thailand recently found distinct benefits from shrimp, according to FeedKind® It promotes strong and healthy growth, while also helping to activate the shrimp’s immune response against Vibrio, the causative agent of premature mortality syndrome.

Since its discovery in 2009, EMS has wreaked havoc on the Asian aquaculture market, causing billions of dollars in losses.

The Calysta Protein Platform is also approved for use in livestock feed and pet food.

Alain LeBlanc, Head of Animal Feed at Calista, said: “Reaching this milestone comes after decades of work and I am proud and excited to finally introduce FeedKind to the largest aquaculture market in the world. We have proven over the years that FeedKind is a highly effective product that can help solve many challenges for feed producers and farmers.”

The joint venture partners are now focused on bringing forward the next stage of development, bringing production to 80,000 tons per year. It is expected to be the first item from Calysseo towards the end of the year.

FeedKind® It will help reduce pressure on wild fisheries. If used instead of traditional sources of protein, 100,000 tons of FeedKind® It can mean between approx. 420,000 – 450,000 tons of wild caught fish can be saved. Uses the same amount of FeedKind instead of vegetable proteins® Can free up to 535 km2 of land and will save 9 billion liters of water.
