Husband of US House speaker charged with drunk driving

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was charged Thursday with drunk driving, weeks after he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Napa County, California, the district attorney said.

In late May, Paul Pelosi, 82, was booked into the Napa County Detention Center. He was released from custody on a promise to appear in the Napa County Superior Court on August 3. read more

The California Highway Patrol said at the time that he was driving a 2021 Porsche and trying to cross State Route 29, when his car hit a 48-year-old man driving a 2014 Jeep. The Highway Patrol said no one was hurt.

California law prohibits drivers from operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.08 grams per deciliter of blood.

“The Napa County District Attorney’s Office has issued a criminal complaint and filed charges against Paul Pelosi based on a motor vehicle collision and driving under the influence of arrest on May 28,” the Napa County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement, adding that it had filed misdemeanor charges.

“The charges filed today include driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher causing injury,” the statement said. The attorney general’s office said his blood sample had 0.082% blood alcohol content and the sample was taken shortly after the accident.

The speaker’s husband could not be reached at home for comment.

Nancy Pelosi was in Rhode Island at the time of the incident giving a speech to kick off the hearing at Brown University, and her spokesperson said she would “not comment on this private matter.”

The couple have been married since 1963.
