South African coffee shop owners support their country

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Robin and Stella Mountain say there’s no place like home.

When they moved from South Africa to the Commonwealth countries, they brought a piece of their heritage with them.

  • Ntaba Coffee House is a coffee shop located in Louisville
  • The owners are fifth generation South Africans
  • All types of coffee and products are imported directly from Africa
  • The couple supports multiple initiatives that support her country

The mountains are fifth generation South Africans. They immigrated to the United States 20 years ago.

In California, they started a honey bee business. After that, a teaching job at Kentucky State University brought them to the Commonwealth.

“I’ve had a rare disease and Elon Musk has it too,” said Robin Mountain. “I can’t work for a salary.”

So in 2015, they opened Ntaba Coffe Haus where they roast coffee and sell foods and produce exclusively imported from their home country.

“I know the regions and the growers this coffee comes from and that to me is a wonderful, exciting circuit,” said Robin Mountain.

Besides a taste of the continent, the couple offers a complete experience of Africa through their company, Ntaba African Safaris.

“While I’m planning on it, I’m living it up again, so I realize I’m on safari all day because I’m working on it and you see the accommodations and that’s really exciting,” said Stella Mountain.

The safari business allows for frequent trips back home and they always pack a little to leave behind.

Five years ago, Mountains began collecting bras for women in Africa.

Robin Mountain recalls, “What really touched my heart was a young lady saying to me after I got my bra on, ‘Thank you, now I can go now I can go for a job interview.

It’s just one of the couple’s many efforts to fulfill the mission of blessing their homeland.

“I have reached that point in life where the lives of others are more important to me than my own,” said Robin Mountain. “We have a word in South Africa. The word was Ubuntu. This means taking care of each other as you would like to take care of yourself.”

This summer, a second Ntaba Coffee Haus will open in Louisville on Fern Valley Road. This store will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
