Australia’s FTA Coffee is committed to providing 100% certified ‘carbon neutral’ green coffee.

Australian green coffee merchant FTA Coffee has become the first Australian importer to offer 100% certified green coffee through the government-backed Climate Active certification programme.

As with most carbon certification schemes, the active climate certification process requires regular accounting of greenhouse gas emissions in supply chains, documented steps to reduce emissions, and procurement of carbon offsets designed to approximate net zero in carbon emissions.

Unlike many third-party carbon certification schemes, the Climate Active initiative is supported by the Australian Federal Government, which along with private sector participants provides marketing support to promote certified companies and products.

The Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard, formerly known as the National Carbon Offset Standard, has been active since 2010.

For its part, FTA Coffee in Altoona, based in Victoria, says it has committed exclusively to providing ClimateActive certified coffee.

“We are beginning the process of working toward carbon neutrality in 2020, starting with accounting for greenhouse gas emissions from all of our activities and those of our suppliers such as coffee growing, processing, shipping, storage and delivery from producing partners,” FTA Coffee General Manager David McKennariey said in a joint announcement with DCN. . At the same time, we have worked to reduce emissions as much as possible by investing in new technology and changing the way we operate. All remaining emissions were then offset by the purchase of carbon credits.”

According to the Australian government’s smart online portal, the company’s contributions will go to a firefighting project in the Northern Territory, Australia, a forest project in New South Wales, a renewable electricity project in Indonesia, cook stove projects in Africa and Central America, and a forestry project. in Peru and a wind farm project in India.

FTA Coffee is part of the HSK Ward Group, which includes B2B and B2C holdings in the commodity and packaged food categories. WTO Certified Green Coffee (Climate Active) is currently available to buyers in Australia and New Zealand.
