Free holiday activities and healthy food for underprivileged children – Quest Media Network

Free holiday activities and healthy food will continue to be offered to underprivileged children throughout Tamside.

The Tameside Council Cabinet has approved arrangements for an extension of the Holiday Activity and Food Program (HAF) to ensure support for low-income families.

The Ministry of Education agreed to continue funding it because of its “impressive participation rates, comprehensive food distribution program and public treasury savings.”

The HAF Coordinator will remain in place to oversee the project and Active Tameside will continue to provide activities and nutritious meals.

The council says the Tamside Initiative to address food poverty, deprivation and social inequalities has proven incredibly successful in supporting thousands of young people and their families, who have provided positive feedback.

All children who receive benefits related to free school meals are eligible for support over the Easter, summer, and Christmas holidays.

Local authorities have flexibility in how they spend their grants and make allowances to better meet the needs of children and families in their areas.

Councilor Lianne Felley, executive member of the Tamside Council on Education, Achievement and Equality said: “I am delighted that this highly successful partnership project in Tamside will continue to receive funding, enabling us to make arrangements to continue providing support to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“Thanks to our work with Active Tameside, schools, volunteer, community and social businesses, we have been able to create a vacation activity and nutritional program that has benefited thousands of young people and their families with healthy and nutritious meals and activities helping them stay fit and engaged.

“The program has been highly praised by the participants and has been recognized as one of the most effective programs of its kind at the national level. I would like to thank everyone involved for her continued success.”
