Free food distribution event announced

There are people in society who are hungry.

Christ the Savior Lutheran Church aims to help. In partnership with 2nd Harvest of Spokane, the church is once again providing free food distribution to the community.

The mobile market takes place on Friday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out. The event will take place in the church parking lot. Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1900 Pine Street, across the street from the YMCA.

“During this time of financial stress and food insecurity for many, the event will provide free food to those in need within the community,” said Casey Drews of Christ our Saviour.

Recipients will not be required to sign in or show any documents. They simply need to drive to pick up groceries.

Unless supplies change, the expected distribution will include meat, produce, pantry, bread and more.

Participants are required to enter through the Lincoln Street side of the parking lot and exit onto Pine Street. Guests are requested not to arrive earlier than 11 years old, as this causes traffic and safety concerns.

Free food handouts are not new to the church as they are usually held several times each year. However, Drews said the church chose to hold more events this year than it held previously — all to help the hungry.

Sandpoint Church has held food drives in partnership with 2nd Harvest on a regular basis for the past ten years. However, during the height of the pandemic, the Spokane nonprofit stepped up to help the communities it serves with access to nutritious foods, Drews previously said.

A member of the 2nd Harvest team reached out to Christ the Redeemer to see if the church was willing to participate in the rural distribution. It didn’t take long for church officials and worshipers to take the opportunity to help others.

Christ our Savior has not looked back since.

Additional distributions in the church are planned for August 4 and September 1. They hope the community will help them spread the word so that all those in need can pass by and get some free groceries.

“The church encourages everyone to help spread the word to those who may be facing challenges feeding their families during this time.
