New kid on the block: Blank Street Coffee

The local chain’s 20th outpost opened a couple of weeks ago in Church and Warren, and it’s great to revitalize this stretch of church again, especially at the subway entrance. Blank Street Coffee is a simple place with regular coffee, some summer drinks and a small selection of baked goods. But it has a nice clean design and the people there are great.

The summer menu is now over – I got an Arnold Palmer and it was delicious. But since I’ve never had a cup of coffee, I’ll leave it up to the professionals to rate it. The large filter is $3, the cold brew is $4.75 and the latte is $4.25.

The cookies are from King Street Baking Company in Brooklyn, and the croissants are from Pain D’Avignon, the 30-year-old bakery from Cape Cod that now has a huge baking operation in Long Island City. They usually serve breakfast burritos from King David Tacos, but since Los Tacos is #1 across the street, they’re relegating to their neighbor in the burrito department.

Blanc Street was founded in 2020 and was quickly taken over by venture capitalists – Forbes reports that they raised $7 million in seed capital and $25 million in Series A funding within a few months last year. From Forbes: “So what makes this Brooklyn-based startup that launched just a year ago such a darling among large organizations? Co-founders Vinay Menda and Issam Freiha conclude that a marriage of “higher quality products, superior comfort` , and “fair prices” is what has generally made the company manage to get a nice spot in a very saturated coffee space, adding how Blank Street’s revenue has increased 15 times since January 2021.”

The idea behind this was originally small locations that provided rentals – the first outlets were run from 5×10 carts – as well as applications of technology in coffee brewing and ordering. The brick-and-mortar cannons are still small—we have six barstools along the edges.

Espresso machines are automated, which the company argues is easier on the coffee maker, and the minimum wage is $23 an hour. Of course there is an app. Signing up gives you a free drink.
