Friday is the last day of Moanalua 99. Here’s where restaurants go

FThe group of restaurants and large small businesses in Ke’eaumoku, then Hale’ Ohana Marketplace, are closed. Now it’s Moanalua 99. While the redevelopment can breathe new life into the neighborhood, it comes at a cost. The purchase of Mapunapuna property by Home Depot has resulted in many old tenants scrambling to find new locations, while others have decided to close permanently.

In the early 2000s, she worked in the lower part of the building from Moanalua 99. At the time it was known as the food court of 99 Ranch Market. Since I worked on a rotating schedule, I had ample opportunity to have breakfast, lunch and dinner there.

With a variety of Asian and local restaurants, the food court was an oasis for dining in the desert of an industrial park. Other main attractions were spacious seating and cool air conditioning. I enjoyed the fresh rush of cool air that greeted me as I opened the sliding doors. In the pre-pandemic period, when I lived in an old apartment without air conditioning, I would drive across town for the hottest weekend at Moanalua 99.

For several years, the food court had a large screen TV so that customers could enjoy local programming and football matches. They even had karaoke on some days. More recently, the place has hosted mini markets and handicraft fairs where local vendors display their handmade wares and cures. Organizations and clubs gathered there. It was truly an oasis, not just for the food, but for the community.

I visited every restaurant this past weekend to see their plans. Here are my pictures of what I found.
