The Tacotarian San Diego is now open in North Park

Tacotarian, a vegetarian Mexican restaurant that originally appeared on the scene in 2018 with its first vegan taco shop in Las Vegas, opened its doors in San Diego this week. Tacotarian San Diego marks the restaurant’s fifth store and a huge step for the team with it being the first to open outside of the state.

Since it opened in Las Vegas 4 years ago, Tacotarian has become a popular destination for tourists and vegetarian celebrities in the location of the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas.

Tacotarian San Diego – The first store outside of Vegas

Team Tacotarian San Diego is an ideal location to launch their first store outside of Las Vegas because it’s not too far from home and has a strong vegan food scene.

The Tacotarian location at 4332 30th Street in North Park was once home to two other vegetarian restaurants, The Modern Vegan and Chicago Not Dogs, and the team hopes to make it a destination for vegetarians and taco lovers living in or traveling to Southern California.

Designed to look like other Tacotarians in Las Vegas, with its prominent black and white bar, light wood and light wood accents, and hanging plants, the restaurant holds a full alcoholic license and features specialty cocktails.

Hot spot for celebrity watching

Tacotarian was founded by two couples, Dan and Regina Simmons and Carlos and Kristen Corral, after they were inspired by a trip to Regina’s hometown of Mexico City.

Tacotarian has become a hotspot for watching celebrities and political figures. In 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines when she chose to stop there while visiting Las Vegas. Other notable scenes at their Las Vegas locations include Chelsea Handler, Brad Garrett, Mayor Garste, and Rami Jaffe, to name a few.

excited for San Diego

“When the pandemic hit, we didn’t know what was in store for us, but we kept our heads down and kept our focus on growing. The demand for our food is there and we just want it to be affordable for everyone in the country,” said Carlos Corral, co-founder of Tacotarian.

Dan Simmons, co-founder of Tacotarian, added, “We’ve been watching California for a long time. We really liked this place because it’s in such an amazing central location and we can’t wait to share our food with San Diego. People have been wanting us to come to California since day one, so It’s great to finally be here.”

With the announcement of its California expansion, the team behind Tacotarian is also unveiling an employee profit-sharing model. The equity model is something the company hopes will continue to grow as a way to raise the bar for employees and give them opportunities for ownership.

Two managers from the Henderson site moved to San Diego to operate the kitchen and FOH and acquired partial ownership of the site. Tom McGowan and Andres Castillo are excited about handling this opening and look forward to WOWing guests in San Diego.

“I am so happy to be starting this new chapter in my life. I dreamed of becoming a restaurateur and this gives me this opportunity. I know this is just the beginning of my Tacotarian career,” said Tom McGowan, Managing Partner at Tacotarian San Diego.
