Travel news: The best destinations in 2022 and the best airlines to get there

(CNN) – This week in travel news Time Out and TIME announced their annual lists of must-visit destinations, while has named the world’s best airlines for 2022.

First, Time Out released a summary of the world’s best cities for 2022. In a list dominated by Europe, Scotland took two of the top five cities. (You can hear what Anthony Bourdain made of the country when he visited in 2015 on the Parts Unknown podcast.)

Then TIME launched its list of the 50 largest places in the world: among them were the Japanese islands, the wine region of South Africa, and a handful of South American cities.

Be careful out there

It’s wildfire season in California, and firefighters are working hard to protect giant sequoias in Yosemite National Park – the largest trees on Earth by volume. The Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru were also threatened by wildfires earlier this month.
In Kyrgyzstan, a group of trekking tourists in the Tian Shan Mountains were lucky to survive a massive avalanche that swept through them on July 8: watch here.

And travelers who don’t experience physical harm may still be looking forward to huge flight delays and cancellations, as airlines and airports scramble to meet summer demand.
